How this Pokemon IV Calculator handles rounding and uncertainty

A visible stat is the end of several integer steps. The calculator does not reverse one simplified equation and pretend the answer is unique. It generates legal hidden-value candidates, runs the selected generation's formula forward, and keeps only candidates that reproduce every observation and optional in-game clue.

Modern IV calculation in Generations 3–9

For HP, the game combines twice the base stat, the 0–31 IV and floor(EV/4), scales the sum by level, then adds the level and 10. Other stats add 5 after the level calculation and only then apply the Nature multiplier. Because each stage is rounded down, several neighboring IVs often produce the same number at a low level.

The Nature selector contains the real 25 Natures, including five neutral Natures. It never treats “+Attack” as a complete Nature because a stat-raising Nature also lowers another stat unless it is neutral.

Why a second level observation helps

One Level 5 or Level 20 stat can represent a wide IV interval. A second reading at another level changes the rounding boundary, so intersecting both readings often removes candidates. The readings must describe the same Pokémon with the same EVs, Nature and form. Leveling through battles can add EVs and invalidate that assumption; a Rare Candy or controlled level change is safer.

You can add up to five readings. More readings do not automatically make an answer correct: one mistyped stat creates a conflict, and the diagnosis names the affected stat instead of silently returning a fabricated result.

Known EVs versus unknown EVs

Known mode uses the exact EV count you enter and checks the 252 per-stat and 510 total limits. Unknown mode tests every legal stat contribution that can remain unchanged across all readings. Since the formula uses floor(EV/4), EV values such as 4, 5, 6 and 7 are indistinguishable from the visible stat alone.

The result therefore reports candidate IVs together with an EV interval. Unknown mode also removes a candidate when its minimum EV requirement cannot fit beside the minimum requirements of the other five stats under the 510 total cap.

Generation 1 and 2 use DVs and Stat Experience

The first two generations use 0–15 DVs. Their training contribution comes from Stat Experience through floor(ceil(sqrt(Stat Experience))/4), with a maximum contribution of 63. Generation 1 has one Special stat. Generation 2 has separate Special Attack and Special Defense base stats, but both visible stats share one Special DV and one Special Stat Experience value.

HP is also linked to the other stats: its DV is assembled from the lowest bit of the Attack, Defense, Speed and Special DVs. The calculator enforces those parity combinations globally, so an HP reading can rule out otherwise valid-looking individual DV ranges.

Characteristic and Judge clues have limits

A Characteristic points to a stat that can be tied for the highest IV and reveals the IV remainder modulo five. If several stats share the highest IV, a hidden personality value chooses which tied stat supplies the phrase. This tool keeps combinations that could produce the selected phrase; it does not claim to recover that hidden tie order.

For Generation 7 and later, the optional Judge filters use the modern per-stat ranges: No Good 0, Decent 1–15, Pretty Good 16–25, Very Good 26–29, Fantastic 30 and Best 31. Earlier game-specific judge sentences are not simulated.

Shedinja and other calculation boundaries

Shedinja always has 1 HP in the modeled summary screen, so HP cannot reveal its IV or EV. The calculator still validates that the observed HP is exactly 1. It uses historical base-stat patches where available, including the Generation 1 Special stat and later official stat changes.

The calculation does not include in-battle stat stages, held items, Abilities, status conditions, Dynamax HP, temporary transformations or other battle modifiers. Choose the form and copy the permanent summary-screen stats before battle.

Which IV calculator rules should I use for FireRed, Emerald, Gen 4, or Gen 9?

Version-specific searches usually map back to a generation ruleset. For Pokémon FireRed, LeafGreen, Ruby, Sapphire, and Emerald, choose Generation 3. Diamond, Pearl, Platinum, HeartGold, and SoulSilver use Generation 4; Black, White, Black 2, and White 2 use Generation 5. Scarlet and Violet use Generation 9. The core 0–31 IV stat formula is modeled under the selected generation while the page also applies the historical base-stat data available for that Pokémon and form.

This is a main-series Pokemon IV calculator, not a Pokémon GO IV calculator. Pokémon GO uses a different stat model, appraisal system, CP calculation, and 0–15 Attack/Defense/HP IVs, so entering GO values here would answer the wrong question. If your search includes “Pokemon GO,” use a tool built specifically for GO rather than forcing those numbers into the main-series formula.

Results stay on your device

The local Pokédex, historical base stats and candidate search run in the browser. The calculator stores your latest state in versioned local storage so a refresh can recover it. Nothing is uploaded by the calculator. A share link is created only when you press the share button, and its URL contains the selected state.

Use Copy Summary when you need a readable record without exposing every input in a URL. Reset clears the saved calculator state after confirmation.

How to read an exact, narrowed or broad result

Exact means one IV or DV remains for every inferable stat. Narrowed means at least one stat has a small candidate set. Broad means the observations are valid but still permit many hidden values. A broad result is not an error; it means the visible information is insufficient.

A conflict means no legal candidate reproduces all inputs under the selected rules. Check the Pokémon form, generation, Nature, level, EV or Stat Experience assumptions and copied stats before adding more observations.

Pokemon IV Calculator FAQ

Why do I get a range instead of one IV?

Integer rounding lets multiple IVs produce the same visible stat, especially at lower levels. Add another unchanged-training level observation or an in-game clue to narrow the range.

Can the calculator work without known EVs?

Yes. Unknown mode searches legal EV contributions that satisfy every reading and remain feasible under the total cap. It may return an EV interval because several exact EV counts have the same effect.

What changes when I select Gen 1 or Gen 2?

The output switches to 0–15 DVs and Stat Experience. Nature, Characteristic and modern Judge filters are disabled, Special is shared where required, and HP DV parity is enforced.

Does a Characteristic prove one stat is uniquely highest?

No. Several stats can tie for the highest IV. The hidden personality value determines which tied stat supplies the Characteristic.

Why is Shedinja HP always unresolved?

Its HP is fixed at 1 regardless of HP IV, EV or level. That visible stat cannot distinguish any HP IV value.

Are my inputs sent to a server?

No. The candidate search runs locally. The latest state stays in browser storage, and a URL state is created only when you copy a share link.
