How to Use This Pokemon Type Calculator

The fastest way to answer a defensive question is to choose the Pokémon’s first type and, when it has one, its second type. The calculator evaluates every attacking type in the selected generation and groups the results by multiplier. A 4× result means both defending types are weak to the same attack. A 0.25× result means both types resist it. A 0× result means at least one defending type grants an immunity, so multiplying the other relationship still produces zero.

For an offensive question, choose the move’s type in the second calculator. The result tells you which single defending types receive 2×, 1×, 0.5×, or no damage from that type. This is useful when choosing a move for general coverage, but it is not a legality checker and does not know the exact moves a particular Pokémon can learn. Attacking Perspective vs. Defending Perspective

A type chart can be read in two directions, and mixing them up is a common source of mistakes. In attacking perspective, the row starts with the move type and the columns represent the target’s defending type. In defending perspective, the row starts with the defender and the columns represent incoming attack types. The numbers do not change; only the direction used to read the relationship changes. This page lets you switch perspectives instead of forcing you to mentally rotate the chart.

The Matrix view is best for comparing many matchups at once. The Type Details view is better when you want a readable summary for one type. Both views use the same calculation table as the single- and dual-type calculators, so the explanation, matrix, and result groups stay synchronized.

Three Useful Dual-Type Examples

Fire vs. Grass / Steel = 4×

Fire is 2× against Grass and 2× against Steel. Multiplying 2 × 2 produces a double weakness.

Electric vs. Water / Flying = 4×

Electric is super effective against both Water and Flying, so the combined defensive multiplier is 4×.

Ground vs. Flying = 0×

Flying is immune to Ground under standard type rules. Immunity reduces the type multiplier to zero before other damage factors are considered.

Why the Pokemon Type Chart Changes by Generation

The main-series type system did not remain identical from the first games to the current era. Generation 1 used fifteen types. Dark and Steel arrived in Generation 2, and Fairy arrived in Generation 6. Some relationships also changed. For example, Steel resisted Ghost and Dark in Generations 2–5 but does not resist those types in the modern chart. Generation 1 also had distinctive Bug–Poison and Ghost–Psychic behavior.

The generation selector changes only the core type chart. Individual moves, abilities, held items, field effects, and game-specific mechanics can still override or modify what happens in battle. The profile labels are therefore a transparent type-system reference rather than a promise to simulate every battle rule.

Which Pokemon type chart should I use for FireRed, Emerald, or Gen 1?

For Pokémon Red, Blue, and Yellow, choose the Generation 1 profile. For FireRed, LeafGreen, Ruby, Sapphire, and Emerald, choose Generations 2–5: those games are Generation 3 and use the same core type relationships represented by that profile. Diamond, Pearl, Platinum, HeartGold, SoulSilver, Black, White, Black 2, and White 2 also belong in the Generations 2–5 profile.

For X and Y onward, choose Generations 6–9 because Fairy exists and Steel no longer resists Ghost or Dark. This makes the page useful for searches such as “Pokemon type chart Fire Red,” “Pokemon type chart Gen 1,” and “Pokemon type chart Gen 3” without creating separate duplicate charts for every game title.

A Pokémon GO type chart is a different rules question. Pokémon GO uses its own battle damage multipliers and treatment of immunities, so this main-series chart should not be presented as a GO calculator.

Type Effectiveness Is Not a Full Damage Calculation

This tool answers one precise question: what is the type-effectiveness multiplier? A full damage calculator also needs the attacker’s level, offensive stat, defender’s defensive stat, move base power, same-type attack bonus, abilities, held items, weather, terrain, critical hits, random damage variation, and other game rules. A 4× weakness can strongly influence a matchup, but it does not guarantee a knockout. Likewise, a neutral hit from a very strong move may deal more damage than a weak super-effective move.

Use the result as a decision layer. After finding a weakness, check whether your Pokémon can legally use a suitable move, whether the opponent has an ability that changes the interaction, and whether your team can safely switch into the expected counterattack. How does the Pokemon type calculator handle dual types?

It multiplies the effectiveness against each defending type. Two weaknesses become 4×, two resistances become 0.25×, and any immunity makes the final type multiplier 0×.

What is the difference between attacking and defending perspective?

Attacking perspective starts with the move type and asks what it hits. Defending perspective starts with the Pokémon’s type and asks what incoming attacks are weak, neutral, resisted, or immune.

Why does the type chart change by generation?

New types were introduced and several relationships changed. This page provides separate Generation 1, Generation 2–5, and Generation 6–9 profiles instead of applying the modern chart to every game.

Does this calculate full battle damage?

No. It calculates the type multiplier only. Stats, level, move power, abilities, items, weather, terrain, and other rules are outside this tool’s calculation boundary.

Can a Pokemon have a 4× weakness or 0.25× resistance?

Yes. Those values appear when both types have the same weakness or resistance. The defensive calculator separates those results so they are easy to notice.
